R290 Refrigerants
FAQs from Leer for Ice Merchandisers

Modern Ice’s strategic partner Leer, Inc. has introduced Ice Merchandisers with an alternative refrigerant solution to work toward the compliance set by the EPA for more environmentally friendly options than the currently used R404a refrigerant.

Leer, Inc will be offering R290 in their Model 30-100 ice merchandisers in the first quarter of 2020.

Questions Answers
What is R290? R290 is referred to as refrigeration grade propane. R290 is classified as a hydrocarbon refrigerant, which is a natural, non-toxic and the top alternative to hydrofluorocarbon refrigerants in cooler and freezer applications.
What are the benefits of R290? Efficiency: Compared to R404a and R134a, R290 allows for a reduced charge per system and lower system energy use, which decreases operating costs.

Eco-Friendly: Ozone Depletion Potential (ODP) of 0 and an ultra-low Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3.
Is R290 safe in ice merchandisers? An ice merchandiser will contain less than 5.29 ounces of R290 which is comparable to the amount of flammable material used in an aerosol can or lighter. The R290 in the merchandisers will be in a hermetically sealed system, DOE compliant, UL listed, and NSF certified.
When does this go into effect / what is the timeline? The first deadline will only effect products placed in service in California starting on January 1, 2020. At that time, all products utilizing refrigerants, not just from Leer, will not legally be allowed to contain R404a refrigerant with the exception of units manufactured prior to January 1, 202
If your business does NOT operate in California, do you have to switch? No. Currently, SNAP and CARB will have no immediate impact on your business requirements. Although it’s likely that additional states will follow California and mandate similar requirements.
How does this impact units already in the field? It doesn’t. All units currently deployed in the field are unaffected. No changes will be required. Leer will continue to supply replacement and service parts.
Can I retrofit my R404a unit to be compatible with R290? No. The Environment Protection Agency (EPA) has ruled that R290 refrigerant can only be used on new equipment.
