Dry vs Wet Ice Production
Packaged Ice Manufacturing Process

Modern Ice offers ice makers which can produce dry or wet ice and equipment to condition wet ice into a dry product. There are several factors to consider when making production decisions for your plant.

Ice Manufacturing Comparison:

Fragmented Ice & Dried Tube Ice Wet Tube Ice
Fragmented ice is ideal for on-demand type operation Wet tube ice is ideal for smaller, manual operations with lower capital
Flows better through handling, packaging, and storage equipment reducing maintenance Lower capital cost requiring no drying mechanism and lower operating cost (versus drying tube ice – not applicable to fragmented ice as it does not require drying)
Requires no ‘cure time’ in freezer and can go directly to distribution Tube ice is available in three specific sizes and is more uniform in the bag
Less snow in bag creates a higher quality product for end users
Product remains loose in bag instead of freezing together
Fragmented ice requires less volume per pound reducing bag costs
Cons Cons
Requires more upfront capital when utilizing tube ice makers as drying equipment would be required (not applicable to fragmented ice as it does not require drying) Requires product to ‘cure’ in freezer before distribution
Fragmented ice makers utilize more electricity than tube ice makers Wet product flows less freely through handling, packaging, and storage equipment causing increased maintenance
