Adding a water chiller is an economical and space-saving way to increase production. The average plant can increase ice production by 5% for every 10℉ reduction of the water temperature without the need to add ice makers.
Modern Ice offers three different types of water chillers: Plate & Frame Heat Exchangers, Shell & Tube Heat Exchangers, and Falling Film Chillers. Each of these types of water chillers can be a direct expansion to either liquid overfeed or flooded ice systems.
The incoming temperature and the gallons per minute of the ice maker in the system is what determines the type of water chiller to be used. Typically for smaller applications the plate and frame heat exchanger would be selected and the falling film chiller is utilized for larger applications. In addition if there are no existing central systems, falling film chillers can be purchased as a package chiller coming with both a compressor and condenser. However, both plate and frame or shell and tube are drop in heat exchangers and take up up less space.
